WAR OFFICE,

30 November 189...

C. O.

2 DEC 19...

I am directed by the Secretary of State for War to transmit herewith, for the information of Lord Knutsford, a copy of a letter which has been addressed to the Treasury in regard to the sale of land in that Colony.

I am to state that no land is required for 240 huts for European troops, and for 1300 bungalows, Gymnasium &c., and some other accessories such as alterations to existing barracks, for married quarters for the force, for Extra " Hospital, enlarged prison, & Head Quarter Officer's Commandant.

The proposal is for barracks in the hills, with a change of site for the sake of air and for defence. South Island.

The fluctuations of prices at Hongkong will greatly depend on the decision for or against having European barracks there instead of elsewhere.

But I feel that the estimate of £262,000 must not be taken as trustworthy, nor is it expected that a complete estimate can be furnished at present.

Yours truly,

A. Rocock

The Under Secretary of State,

Colonial Office,

S.W.
